Big Lots Layaway

The layaway plan at Big Lots is not well-publicized, and in fact they don’t even call it “layaway” (which could have an impact on consumer protection). At many Big Lots locations, usually for furniture only, they have something called “Price Hold.” In most cases you put 10 percent down and they’ll hold it for 90 days. Some shoppers report being charged $5 for this service; be sure to ask questions of the store management before using it.

If you put furniture on layaway and see something else you like instead can you exchange and continue to pay?

  2. matt says:

i would think so..most places just refund your money, and you start the process over again, and if you’ve made payments on the ‘not wanted’ furniture you will be refunded that.

I just wanted to comment on the Barbara’s question regarding if you see something else that you like instead, can you sybstitute the new item in and pay on the layaway. I can tell you that I did that exact thing at the big lots in my home state of Indiana. After putting one particular recliner on “price hold” (which does work the same as layaway), I saw a different recliner I liked better and the salesperson just substituted the new item and made the necessary adjustments, and I continued to pay on my lawaway.

Big lots was very accommodating. I really like shopping there. Their serta mattress sale is going on until Feb. 25th, so, now, I just need to find out if you can do a “price hold” on the mattress sets.:)>

Does anyone know if they still have layaway in 2016? I see a leasing program now but I am not sure if this took place of the layaway option they have always had.

  10. admin says:

Yes! My research indicates that Big Lots has long referred to its program as “Price Hold” rather than layaway, but I see instances of the practice at some Big Lots locations as recently as January 2016. A $5 fee may be assessed; ask a local store clerk or management for details.
